Answers for tennis parents

What is the difference between a USTA Level 6 and a Level 7?

Level 7 is the entry level: one day of short matches, 12 points for each main-draw win, and almost every Level 7 takes the lowest-ranked players first. Level 6 is the step up: up to two days, often best of 3 with a match tiebreak, 20 points for each main-draw win, and most take the highest-ranked players first.

Points

Both levels pay by wins, counting the first 4 wins of the tournament, main draw and consolation together. Where the tournament awards a champion and finalist, they get a bonus on top.

A Level 7 champion earns up to 56. A Level 6 champion earns up to 95.

Who gets in

Almost every Level 7 takes the lowest-ranked players first, because it is the entry level and the field is kept for players who need it. So a strong ranking doesn't help a junior get into a Level 7, and it can keep them out.

Most Level 6 tournaments go the other way: highest on the National Standings List first. That list includes 15% of a junior's 6 best doubles results, so doubles helps a junior get into a Level 6.

Moving up

There is no rule for when to move from Level 7 to Level 6, but the numbers are worth knowing. 60 points from 3 main-draw wins at a Level 6 is more than the 56 a junior earns for winning a Level 7.

And because Level 7 takes the lowest-ranked first, a junior whose ranking climbs can find Level 7 fields harder to get into, while Level 6 fields get easier.
