NUTRITION AND HYDRATION PREPARATION FOR THIS TOURNAMENT
Thank you for registering for our event! We have designed this event to give players lots of play for the amount of travel many of you are committing to in order to help you prepare for your future in tennis! Ratings like WTN and UTR measure your ability to win matches, but your ranking measures your ability to win tournaments, and those are not completely overlapping skillsets!
First off, you live in the Southern section, it's going to be on the hotter side. There are no temperatures in the USTA rulebook. You will need to have a solid nutrition and hydration plan in place for the rest of your junior career even if you move to a cooler part of the country. We have seen way too many players eaching fried chicken sandwiches, burgers, fries, and drinking soda over the last few years. Not suprisingly, we later see those exact same players complaining about the heat!
If you sign up for singles, you will get 4 single matches in 2 days assuming full draws and no walkovers/withdrawals. That's the same as winning or making a deep run at an L6 or some L5s. If you also play doubles, you'll play 4 or 5 doubles matches with 4 singles matches in 3 days, which is what it's like to make deep runs in singles and doubles at an L4 or L5. The difference in this tournament is you can PLAN on that number of matches!

Familiarize yourself with our expectations to ask for more time as posted on the tournament website. If you have not entered your score in the MTA we will not discuss moving your match time until that is done.
WEATHER
We are expecting 90s the entire event. You need to start hydrating Tuesday the week of the event and continue hydrating until you are eliminated from the tournament PLUS the rest of that day. It is something that can compound over days while taking a long time to fix.
WITHDRAWALS
All withdrawals must be submitted in writing via email to bill.reynolds@carync.gov . You must include the reason for your withdrawal in the email.

SELECTIONS and Seeding
We will use the Combined Standing List and apply it to the Southern Quotas listed under the Entry Information on this tournament website. The alternate lists for singles are ordered appropriately by national ranking as one unified alternate list.
You are likely used to looking at MTA for ordered lists for acceptance. This will NOT work for this tournament due to the quotas by state.
No refunds will be granted for any reason starting when selections were completed. I will sent requests for payment for anyone who's initial payment method didn't go through. I reserve the right to remove you from the draw at any time if this is not paid in a timely manner.

Will my junior get in?
No draw is full yet. Selection is by ranking list, so a junior with no ranking can still get in when a draw is not full, and goes on the alternate list when it is.
What is a Level 3?
USTA junior tournaments run from Level 7 (local, open to anyone) up to Level 1 (national). Lower number, stronger field, more points.
When do we know?

REGISTERING FOR TWO TOURNAMENTS
You are not allowed to be registered for two tournaments at once after you are selected into the main draw in one of them. For example, if you are an alternate for this tournament, and register for an L6 next weekend, once you are accepted to the main draw of the L6, you need to withdraw from this tournament. Withdrawing from the L6 main draw in order to take a main draw spot in this tournament will result in 4 suspension points in the USTA Suspension system.
ON SITE ALTERNATES
We will do on site alternates for this event for both singles and doubles. On site alternates means you show up Thursday for doubles and/or Friday for singles, and check in at the clubhouse by around 8am (exact time to be published later) to be on site and ready to take the spot of someone who withdraws late. You MUST remain on site at all times until the last match in your division goes on court. If we call you to be an alternate, and we discover you are not on site, we will immediately move on to the next on site alternate. This is because when we call you, we'll be sending you to a court.
Please note you cannot take the draw spot of someone withdrawing from their first match that intends to compete in future matches. We can only put you in a spot where someone is completely withdrawing with no intention of playing any matches.
Draw Formats
We are playing compass draws for BOTH singles and doubles. That means you are guaranteed 4 rounds of play. Note that withdrawals, walkovers, and byes count as a round of play. Assuming a full draw, all doubles players will play Thursday and Saturday minimum. All singles players will play Friday and Saturday minimum. The draw naturally sorts players by level, so if you lose your first 3 matches, your 4th will be against someone who also lost their first 3 matches. Plan to be with us longer than you expect!
DOUBLES
The deadline to name a partner is 12pm, noon, Monday, May 31st.
As you look at the doubles selections, we will go by combined standing in the following order:
1st - Teams with 2 main draw singles players
2nd - Teams is 1 main draw singles player
3rd - Teams with no main draw singles players
I will put teams paired at the deadline with 2 main draw singles players in the doubles main draw. The alternate list is comprised of teams with one or no singles main draw players, and is not ordered in any way.
If you do not see your team in main draw or alternates on the tournament webpage, make sure to name your partner in the MTA App. I'll go through it once a day and update the USTA website.
If you have no intention of playing doubles only, please email me to withdraw.
MTA Rain Procedure
We will utilize an on-deck process within MTA. If you receive a "court assignment" of "OD1" or "OD2", you are the next, or 2nd match on. You are to immediately report to the covered courts and wait for your match there, close to your bags, ready to hop on your court as quickly as possible. We will have a very short expectation of how long you take to get on court one assigned an indoor court. Seven indoor courts are great, but they are no replacement for 25 outdoor courts. The faster matches go on, the more we stay on time!
Selections and Draw Limits
Singles draws will be limited to 64 players. Doubles draws will be limited to 32 teams. Both singles and doubles will play compass draws.
The Southern Quota system will be in effect. Each state gets a certain number of draw positions given by national combined standing. There are at large spots open as well for players who do not receive a State Quota spot. Any state quota spots that go unused will be added to the pool of at large spots available to players of any state.
Scoring
Singles scoring will be 2/3 sets to 6 games, with ads, 7pt tiebreaker at 6-6, 10pt tiebreaker in lieu of the 3rd set. Doubles scoring will be one 8 game pro set, with ads, 7pt tiebreaker at 8-8.
Rest Periods and Asking for More Time
We are in the Summer Season! That means the following rest periods are in effect:
Singles to Singles - 2 hours
Singles to Doubles - 1 hour
After any doubles match - 30min
The procedure to ask for more time is to finish your match, ENTER YOUR SCORE, know your next match time, and go to an official in your vicinity IMMEDIATELY after finishing your match.
Talk to the official and one of three things will happen:
1 - They'll radio the tournament desk and adjust your match time.
2 - They'll point you to another official who will do that.
3 - They will direct you to the clubhouse to speak with the tournament desk.
If you leave the facility or take too long to get in communication with us you forfeit your ability to ask for more time. This is out of fairness to your opponent. Coming back later and changing the match time is allowing you to operate on your schedule, and forcing your opponent to adjust at the last minute.

Tentative Schedule of Play (Be prepared to play starting at 8am any day of the tournament)
If you are playing doubles, you need to plan to play on Thursday through Saturday minimum. If you are playing singles, you will have matches on both Friday and Saturday guaranteed, and it's a 50/50 shot you'll have matches Sunday. In a compass draw, starting with the 4th round of play, once you lose, you are eliminated (with the exceptions of losing in the East QF as you will go into the 5th-8th playoff, and losing in the East SF as you will go into the 3/4 Playoff).
Thursday - 3 rounds of doubles (we are planning to start play at 10am, but could start earlier or later is factors force us to)
Friday - One round of doubles, Two rounds of singles
Saturday - One round main draw singles, two rounds consolation singles, one round of doubles
Sunday - One round main draw singles, two rounds consolation singles
Monday - One round of main draw singles plus the 3/4 Playoff after suitable rest
Tuesday - Main draw finals
Coaching Will Again Be Allowed Between the 1st and 2nd Sets!!!
USTA Southern will be piloting coaching between the first and second sets at this event. This will change the 2-minute break between the first and second sets to 3 minutes. Here are the key points about coaching between sets that will apply to coaching after the first set and after the second set:
• Players must remain inside the fence for all coaching. The Coach must remain outside the fence for all coaching.
• Players are to raise their rackets at the completion of the set and wait for an official to start the 3min coaching period.
• A player forfeits all remaining coaching time once they leave the court to go to the bathroom. Players are to inform an official they will be going to the bathroom, then go to and return from the bathroom with no interaction with spectators.
• Failure to abide to these rules could result in Code Violations (Point Penalty System), Suspension Points, and/or losing the ability to receive coaching for the remainder of the event.
Some tips to keep in mind to maximize coaching impact:
• To best maximize your time, the coach should position themselves ready to coach before the last point of the set starts. Coaches are to stay a few steps back from any fence until the set has ended and an official starts the coaching period.
• Most players can only focus on one, maybe two things in a coaching period such as this. It is best to keep it short and simple.
• The 3 minutes between sets is for both coaching and a break. If you talk to your player for 3 minutes, they must immediately start the next set with no break.
• Keeping these points in mind, it is advisable to chat for 60-90sec and then let your player go back to the bench to rest and mentally process their thoughts.
If this coaching is something you want to happen more in the future, make sure to make this as smooth and easy for our officials as possible! The Officials will be giving a report of their experience and you want them to report to Southern that this additional coaching had little to no impact on the flow of the tournament!

PlaySight Broadcast and Recordings
Currently, 17 of our courts at CTP have PlaySight cameras (Stadium and 1-16). We will be streaming those 17 courts for the entire duration of the event. Grandparents are the #1 lover of this, but uncles, aunts, and coaches are fans too! Watching is free, just setup a PlaySight account and click on the facility Town of Cary.
We are happy to tell you all that we will be providing free PlaySight recordings during the event as one of your player gifts!
In order to get a recording, please go ahead and download the PlaySight app, and make an account. If you want a recoding, we must start it before the match. We are not constantly recording everything. Please download the app and make an account now so you don't miss anything while you're here!
Once you are assigned your court, the player needs to go to the court, but the parent or guardian will come to the front desk to start the recording. You can only record your own player's match. The front desk will give you a QR code to scan. If you're recording a singles match, please set the timer to 2 hours. If it's a doubles match, please set the timer to 1.5 hours.
Courts will be assigned randomly, for the most part, so we will not take any requests for court assignments. The courts not assigned randomly are the matches that we will the chairing. All R16 main draw singles matches onward will be chaired. We will also be chairing matches before that. Those chairs will mainly focus on the highest seed available at the time the court is available, but other matches between unseeded players will get chaired too.
Additional Practice Facilities
All matches will be played at Cary Tennis Park. These sites are available for hits on a first come, first served basis. They may be occupied by the public, league matches, or classes:

Onsite Alternates
Starting roughly 24-48 hours before play begins, we will stop calling players on the alternate list to fill vacant draw spots and move to an onsite alternate procedure. If you wish to be an onsite alternate for singles, you will need to register at the CTP Clubhouse front desk Friday moring by around 8am with your name, USTA number, and phone number. Then you will need to remain at CTP until all first round matches go on court for your division. We will order onsite alternates by combined standing. Should someone withdraw last minute, we will call onsite alternates in order and tell you what court to go to. If we call you and discover you are not on site, we will immediately move on to the next onsite alternate.
NAMING DOUBLES PARTNERS and LOOKING FOR DOUBLES PARTNERS
Please name your doubles partner on the MTA waiver. I will periodically go through and update the USTA website with pairs. I will eventually post a deadline for naming doubles partners.

Play in all matches is governed by Friend at Court , the USTA Code; USTA Southern Rules; USTA Southern Tournament Regulations, with the current USTA Point Penalty System in effect for all matches.

Starting in January 2027, USTA Southern L3 - L5 Tournaments will play no-ad scoring in Doubles.
SIGNING UP FOR TWO DIVISIONS:
Players may register for two age divisions in Level 3 Closed, Level 4 Open/Closed tournaments. Players that do register for both divisions will automatically be selected in the older division if they are selected for both. Players not selected to either division will remain on both alternate lists for both divisions but will need to play the division they first get into from the alternate lists. They will be removed from the Alternate list in the other division. Once a player is selected for any one division, NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE.
YOU MUST PLAY THE SAME AGE DIVISION FOR SINGLES AND DOUBLES:
Per STA rules for all National Level 3-5's, you must play the same doubles division as your chosen singles division.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL PLAYERS RE: CONCURRENT TOURNAMENTS
USTA Regulations state the following:
• Player shall not enter two tournaments at same time. When entries close, a player shall not be entered in two or more sanctioned tournaments, if any part of the tournaments overlap unless each Tournament Committee involved understands the situation and concurs in writing. After a player has been eliminated from a tournament whose schedule of play partially overlaps with that of a second tournament, the player may enter the second tournament.
(USTA REGULATIONS IV.C. (Standards of Conduct), 2025 Friend at Court, #s 12 through #17 apply).
Penalty: (4) Suspension points to player in violation per offense, enforced by either Tournament Committee, and/or USTA Administration.
SPORTSMANSHIP & THE USTA PLAYER OATH:
All participants shall familiarize themselves with The Code which is meant to be a guide to fair play. By participating in the tournament, all players agree to abide by the USTA Player Oath: "I recognize that tennis is a sport that places the responsibility for fair play on me. I promise to abide by the rules of the game, which require me to give the benefit of the doubt to my opponent. At all times I shall strive to compete with the true spirit of sportsmanship, recognizing that my behavior on the court is a direct reflection of my character. Whether my matches end with my victory or defeat, I promise to conduct myself in a way that honors my opponents, those who support me, and the game of tennis."
SAFE PLAY INFORMATION FOR PLAYERS & COACHES:
Please be advised that if you plan to bring your coach with you, he/she SHOULD be Safe Play Approved through the end of the Tournament. This includes completing SafeSport training, acknowledging the USTA Safe Play Policy which includes reporting requirements, and a criminal background check. You can check if your coach is Safe Play Approved by visiting: https://www.usta.com/en/home/safe-play/search-for-a-tennis-provider.html.
